What Do Dental Hygienists Do?

Often times, when we go to the dentist, we spend more time with the hygienist! This is because dental hygienists are highly skilled dental practitioners who are qualified to perform a number of duties. Here are just a few things your dental hygienist can do.

Administer Routine Cleaning Appointments

A dental hygienist is trained to give thorough cleaning of teeth at routine checkups. They remove surface stains and deposits from teeth, clean out food particles and obstruction from in between teeth, and may floss or provide a fluoride boost to the mouth of the patient.

Take X-Rays

Dental hygienists often take photos of patients’ teeth to scan for abnormality or malocclusions. They then show them to the dentist to see what she or he advises.

Educate Patient on How to Care for Teeth

Hygienists spend the most time with patients, on average. This makes them a direct guide and educator of proper dental hygiene and oral health for each person they encounter. They’ll tell you what you might be missing from your routine, or how to improve your technique for brushing and flossing. They’re also happy to answer any questions you may have about toothbrushes and toothpastes, or about any dental procedure you’re considering.

Evaluate Overall Dental Health of the Patient

Routine exams done in dental offices are often done by hygienists, who are qualified to inspect for dental problems like cavities, gum disease, periodontal disease, or signs of certain oral cancers. They are detail-oriented and know what to look for. A hygienist will notice problems and discuss them with the dentist to find a course of action.
