Back-to-School Dental Checklist

group of young kids smiling, happy to be back to school after visiting the dentist

And just like that, the summer season is almost over. Now is the time for kids to gear up to go back to school (whether they’re excited about it or not). We know you probably have plenty of items on your to-do list already to ensure that your child has everything they need for school, but there are a couple more things you might want to add so that their smile and oral health are looked after, too. Here’s a back-to-school dental checklist:

Routine Dental Visit

This one’s an easy one but an important one. Set up a dental appointment for your child so that they can start the school year with a fresh, healthy smile. Not only will the dentist be able to give their teeth a good cleaning, but they’ll also be able to spot any trouble areas that need a closer look. It’s better to handle those sorts of things before class begins anyways so you don’t have to fuss with falling behind on lesson plans or homework!

Extra Oral Health Consultations

Aside from a regular dental check-up, it may be worth it to get a consultation with a dental professional for orthodontic treatment, especially if your child just got their permanent teeth. That way you can plan ahead if they’ll need braces. Another reason for a special consultation is if you know that your kid is going to be playing contact sports. You’ll want to get them an athletic mouthguard so their teeth and gums are protected from injury from the get-go.

Brand New Brushing Supplies

Pencils, pens, journals, binders, and books are probably all supplies you’re planning on picking up so your kid has what they need for their studies. During that shopping trip, pick up the supplies they need for at-home oral care too like a new toothbrush, some floss, and mouthwash. It’s easier to practice good dental hygiene when all the tools you need are right there in front of you!
